Before coming into films, Tamil Superstar Ajith started his career as a mechanic. He worked as part-time two-four wheeler mechanic and was a full-time garment businessperson based mostly in Erode until 1990.
He initially made debut in a Telugu film known as Prema Pustagam in 1992. Ajith did tiny budget films before obtaining fame as an actor in his award-winning flick Kadhal Kottai.
Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan appreciated the film by giving 52 marks and mentioned that “The basic plot is a novel idea which has been given a good shape and life by the filmmaker”.
The film was dubbed into Telugu as Prema Lekha and to Kannada as Yaare Neenu Cheluve (1998). Agathiyan additionally remade the moving-picture show in Hindi titled Sirf tum (1999). This film conjointly remade in Bengali titled Hothat Brishti (1998) directed by Basu Chatterjee. The film was released as a novel in 2010 beneath a similar name.
